Surgical Options
If you have determined that weight-loss surgery is right for you, then the next step is to choose the procedure that's best fits your personal lifestyle. The two most common surgical weight-loss procedures are the Lap Band® and
gastric bypass. In the majority of cases, we perform both procedures
laparoscopically, which is a minimally invasive technique compared to regular
open surgery.
A great benefit of both the Lap Band® procedure and Gastric Bypass is the impact that they have on other weight-related illnesses including diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea.
Let's go over some of the benefits of each of these procedures. First, let's look at the positives of Gastric Bypass. Gastric Bypass has been around longer than Lap Band® and has an impressive success rate among the severely obese.
With Gastric Bypass, you can:
- Expect to lose 60-80 percent of your excess weight.
- You'll lose weight faster than with Lap Band®
- You should be able to tolerate most foods.
Gastric Bypass has been known to diminish, and in some cases, totally eradicate, the presence of type II diabetes. But, there is a higher complication rate and the possibility of vitamin deficiencies, requiring the need for supplemental vitamins.
The Lap Band® is a newer procedure and the most common worldwide.
Providing significant weight loss with less complications.
- You can expect to lose 40-70 percent of your excess weight with the Lap Band®.
- The Lap Band® provides for slower, more natural weight loss.
- Fewer complications, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster recovery.
- Lap Band® is adjustable.
- There is a low risk of vitamin deficiencies with the Lap Band®.
Yet we do recommend vitamin supplements.
The Proven Benefits of Surgery
- Increased physical mobility and stamina
- Improved mental well-being and self-esteem
- Freedom to explore personal, social, and vocational opportunities
- Improvement or resolution of weight-related illnesses
Though the benefits of surgery can be dramatic, it's important to remember that bariatric surgery is an aggressive treatment and should be used as a last option. It is not a cure for obesity—but it is a highly effective stepping stone to managing health issues and reduce illnesses related to weight.
