What is Obesity?

Turn on the TV and watch the news and within no time you'll hear a news story about the growing concern over obesity. It appears to be reaching epidemic proportions, but what is obesity, really? At the individual level, obesity is a disease in which the body stores excess fat, and that excess weight can cause one or more weight-related health problems (also known as co-morbidities).

Morbid Obesity

Another term you may hear is morbid obesity. This condition exists when a person is extremely obese and medical conditions occur as a direct result of the excess weight. Technically, a person who is morbidly obese is defined by one of the following descriptions:

  • More than 200% of their ideal weight
  • More than 100 pounds overweight
  • Has a Body Mass Index of more than 40
